ResTech Bridges the Gap between Academia and Industry

ResTech recently participated in the development of the proof of concept electronic device, with its industry colleague Aurora Energy, for a plug-in alarm to detect electrical faults in domestic systems.   Aurora achieved a milestone earlier this year with the successful launch of the final commercial product.
Marketed as WireAlertâ„¢, the safety device plugs into a power point and sounds an alarm when it detects an unsafe condition caused by an impaired or broken neutral.  Such situations have the potential to cause electric shocks to anyone coming into contact with conductive metal equipment, appliances or plumbing in the home.

Aurora Energy, which covers all of Tasmania, will distribute the device free of charge to more than 200,000 households and small to medium enterprises by November this year.  Several mainland utilities have shown significant interest in the device, with trials being conducted in most states.

The WireAlert device won the Engineers Australia (Tasmanian Division) 2009 Engineering Excellence Award, and is a finalist in the National award, which will be announced in Canberra during November.

ResTech is an AusIndustry Registered Research Agency (RRA), and as such can apply for Federal assistance for its projects. As an RRA, ResTech can be independently contracted to fulfil any R&D project for clients such as Aurora with strict confidentiality agreements.
