ResTech recently designed and completed experiments on behalf of an industrial client to empirically determine the behavior of a sample set of high voltage current limiting fuses under a specified fault event.

A small sample set of fuses were provided for indicative (as opposed to type) testing. ResTech was requested to confirm fuse actuation for a 6.6kV, 1,200Amp fault, with the experimental objectives of:

  1. Empirically determine the fuse actuation time under ~1,200Amp fault level
  2. Establish that the current limiting feature (unique to this fuse type) is intact and operable

Testing was successfully completed at the Ampcontrol Transformers High Voltage Test Laboratory using measurement equipment from the University of Newcastle.
